Leo Moran contemplates his home town from the bridge over the River Nanny

‘I’m standing on the bridge over the town’s river, looking at the modest but crystal clear flow of a few inches of water over the stony bed, just as I would have done when I was twelve years old. It’s no Mississippi or Volga but it’s our river on which the town was founded. It was deemed decent enough even for Rory O’Connor, the last High King Of Ireland, to have his wonderful castle built on its banks about eight hundred and fifty years ago…’
